Trace amounts of NMN have been reported in certain plant foods, including edamame, avocado, broccoli, cucumber, and cabbage. Reported concentrations vary widely because analytical methods differ and food matrices complicate extraction. Endogenous production in cells is generally considered more quantitatively important than dietary intake, though precise human turnover rates are difficult to establish. Commercial NMN for research or consumer products is commonly made through enzymatic synthesis or chemical phosphorylation routes. Regulatory classification differs by country; in some jurisdictions NMN is sold as a supplement, while in others it is treated as a novel food ingredient or restricted substance.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide found in cells. Its structure combines a nicotinamide ring, a ribose sugar, and a phosphate group. As an intermediate in the NAD+ salvage pathway, NMN is converted to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a coenzyme central to cellular redox reactions. NAD+ also serves as a substrate for enzymes involved in DNA repair, stress responses, and metabolic regulation. The compound is therefore part of normal cellular biochemistry rather than an exclusively synthetic molecule.
Commercial NMN is produced through enzymatic or chemical routes, and the resulting material can vary in purity, counterion, and residual solvent content. Buyers typically rely on certificates of analysis, but independent verification through third-party laboratories provides stronger assurance. Regulatory treatment differs by country; in the United States, NMN has been subject to shifting guidance about its status as a dietary supplement, while other markets permit sales under local rules. No universal pharmacopeial monograph exists for NMN, so specifications often come from suppliers, research protocols, or regional requirements.
Solid NMN is generally handled as a moisture-sensitive compound. Dry material stored desiccated at low temperature, protected from light, tends to remain stable for extended periods. Aqueous solutions are less stable and can undergo hydrolysis, especially at elevated temperature or alkaline pH. The anomeric form also matters: beta-NMN is the naturally occurring form, while alpha-NMN can appear as a synthetic impurity. Purity and storage conditions therefore influence both analytical results and experimental reproducibility.

In the salvage pathway, NMN is generated from nicotinamide and 5-phosphoribosyl-1-pyrophosphate by the enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase. A second route produces NMN from nicotinamide riboside through phosphorylation by nicotinamide riboside kinases. NMN is then converted to NAD+ by nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferases, often called NMNAT enzymes. This stepwise route allows cells to recycle nicotinamide and maintain NAD+ levels under changing metabolic conditions. The relative contribution of each route varies by tissue, species, and physiological state, and it remains an active area of research.
Research on NMN has expanded because NAD+ concentrations decline with age in some tissues and because NAD+ participates in energy metabolism, DNA repair, and signaling. Animal studies have reported changes in NAD+ levels after NMN administration, but human data are more limited and often focus on safety, pharmacokinetics, and biomarker changes. Questions remain about oral absorption, tissue distribution, and whether changes in blood NAD+ reflect changes inside specific organs. NMN is not an approved drug, and claims about its clinical effects should be distinguished from established biochemical findings.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure combines a nicotinamide ring, a ribose sugar, and a phosphate group. The compound exists in cells as an intermediate in the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a central redox cofactor. NMN is distinct from nicotinamide riboside, another related pyridine nucleotide, although the two compounds can converge in metabolic pathways. Its chemical formula is C11H15N2O8P, and it carries a net negative charge at physiological pH.
Regulatory treatment of NMN differs by country and has changed over time. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration has stated that NMN is excluded from the definition of a dietary supplement because it was investigated as a drug before being marketed as a supplement; enforcement and legal interpretation continue to evolve. In the European Union, NMN may require authorization as a novel food before sale. In Japan, NMN has been marketed in some food products, while it is not approved as a therapeutic drug in major markets. These categories affect labeling, permitted claims, and quality oversight.
Solid NMN is generally handled as a moisture-sensitive and light-sensitive material. Suppliers commonly recommend storage at minus 20 degrees Celsius in a sealed, desiccated container, protected from light. Aqueous solutions are less stable than the solid and may degrade faster at elevated temperatures or extreme pH values. Because NMN contains a phosphate ester and a glycosidic bond, hydrolysis and other degradation pathways are plausible under unfavorable conditions. Stability data from independent laboratories remain limited, so handling recommendations often reflect supplier practice rather than published consensus.
Inside cells, the enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase, or NAMPT, converts nicotinamide and a ribose-phosphate donor into NMN. A second enzyme, NMN adenylyltransferase, then converts NMN into NAD+. NAD+ participates in redox reactions and serves as a substrate for signaling enzymes such as sirtuins, PARPs, and CD38. Because NAD+ levels tend to decline with age in many organisms, NMN has drawn interest as a possible way to influence that decline. Whether oral NMN reliably raises NAD+ in human tissues, and whether any such change modifies disease risk, remain open research questions.
NMN is present in small amounts in some foods, including certain vegetables, fruits, and animal products, but food content varies widely and is not well standardized. In laboratory research, NMN is used as a tool compound to study NAD+ metabolism, mitochondrial function, and cellular stress responses. Animal studies have reported changes in NAD+ levels and various physiological measures after NMN administration, but species differences and study designs limit direct extrapolation to humans. Human trials have largely focused on safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics, with fewer studies examining clinical endpoints.
Quality control for NMN materials typically includes identity, assay, purity, and impurity profiling. Tests may cover residual solvents, heavy metals, microbial limits, and water content, depending on the intended use and local rules. Impurity profiles can include related substances such as nicotinamide, nicotinamide riboside, and NAD+, which may form during synthesis or storage. Because commercial NMN can be offered as different salts or hydrate forms, a certificate of analysis should state the form and the analytical methods used. Independent verification is relevant because supplement markets vary in testing requirements and enforcement.
Laboratory identification of NMN usually relies on chromatographic separation coupled with ultraviolet or mass spectrometric detection. High-performance liquid chromatography with UV absorbance can quantify the compound against a reference standard, while liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry offers lower detection limits and better specificity in complex matrices. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy can confirm structural identity and isomeric form. Ion chromatography or capillary electrophoresis may be used to identify counterions such as sodium. Method validation includes accuracy, precision, linearity, and limits of detection.
== Accessibility == Some transgender people choose to self-administer hormone replacement medications, often because doctors have too little experience in this area, or because no doctor is available. Others self-administer because their doctor will not prescribe hormones without an approval letter from a psychotherapist. Many therapists require extended periods of continuous psychotherapy and/or real-life experience before they will write such a letter. Because many individuals must pay for evaluation and care out-of-pocket, costs can be prohibitive. Access to medication can be poor even where health care is provided free. In a patient survey conducted by the United Kingdom's National Health Service in 2008, 5% of respondents acknowledged resorting to self-medication, and 46% were dissatisfied with the amount of time it took to receive hormone therapy. The report concluded in part: "The NHS must provide a service that is easy to access so that vulnerable patients do not feel forced to turn to DIY remedies such as buying drugs online with all the risks that entails. Patients must be able to access professional help and advice so that they can make informed decisions about their care, whether they wish to take the NHS or private route without putting their health and indeed their lives in danger." Self-administration of cross-gender hormones without medical supervision may have untoward health effects and risks.
On 24 April 1939, Paul Harteck and his assistant, Wilhelm Groth, had written to the Armed Forces High Command (OKW), alerting it to the possibility of the development of an atomic bomb. The Army Weapons Branch (HWA) had established a physics section under the nuclear physicist Kurt Diebner. After the war began on 1 September 1939, the HWA moved to control the German nuclear weapons program. From then on, Hahn participated in a ceaseless series of meetings related to the project. After the Director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics, Peter Debye, left for the United States in 1940 and never returned, Diebner was installed as its director. Hahn reported to the HWA on the progress of his research. Together with his assistants, Hans-Joachim Born, Siegfried Flügge, Hans Götte, Walter Seelmann-Eggebert and Strassmann, he catalogued about one hundred fission product isotopes. They also investigated means of isotope separation; the chemistry of element 93 and methods for purifying uranium oxides and salts. On the night of 15 February 1944, the KWIC building was struck by a bomb. Hahn's office was destroyed, along with his correspondence with Rutherford and other researchers, and many of his possessions. The office was the intended target of the raid, which had been ordered by Brigadier General Leslie Groves, the director of the Manhattan Project, to disrupt the German uranium project. Albert Speer, the Reich Minister of Armaments and War Production, arranged for the institute to move to Tailfingen (today part of Albstadt) in southern Germany.
However, in a preprint study, Carnegie Mellon University researchers tested the behavior of agents in a simulated software company and found that none of the agents could complete a majority of the tasks assigned to them. Other researchers had similar findings with Devin AI and other agents in both formal business settings and freelance work. In June 2025, CNN argued that CEOs's statements on AI replacing their employees were a strategy to "[keep] workers working by making them afraid of losing their jobs." Tech companies have pressured employees to use generative AI models in their work, including AI coding agents. Brian Armstrong, the CEO of Coinbase, fired several employees who did not. Some business leaders have replaced some of their employees with agents, but have said that the agents would need more supervision than those employees. In October 2025, Futurism questioned whether Amazon's previously announced efforts to replace parts of its workforce with generative AI and AI agents could have led to the October 2025 outage of Amazon Web Services. Large technology companies such as Salesforce, Klarna and IBM announced layoffs in 2025, replacing hundreds of their employees in human resources or customer service with AI agents. However, Klarna later rehired several human employees. Yoshua Bengio warned at the 2025 World Economic Forum that "all of the catastrophic scenarios with AGI or superintelligence happen if we have agents". Financial authorities have warned that more complex and autonomous "agentic" AI could become a channel for systemic risk in finance.
== History == The drug was invented by Ciba-Geigy (now Novartis) in the early 1980s and sold to Jenner Biotherapies in the 1990s. In 2003, IDM Pharma bought the rights and developed it further. IDM Pharma was acquired by Takeda along with mifamurtide in June 2009. Mifamurtide had already been granted orphan drug status by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001, and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) followed in 2004. It was approved in the 27 European Union member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway by a centralized marketing authorization in March 2009. The drug was denied approval by the FDA in 2007. Mifamurtide has been licensed by the EMA since March, 2009.
Gepants (eg. rimegepant, ubrogepant, and atogepant) are also a new group of anti migraine drugs, along with ditans. They are calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonists. Gepants have been suggested to have less pain relief at 2 hours compared to triptans. Similar to ditans, they offer another therapy option that does not include vasoconstriction, thus may be suitable for those with cardiovascular risk factors. They are well tolerated with fewer adverse effects compared to triptans .

In humans, FDC-SP was first found within follicular dendritic cell isolates from the tonsil, and later was found to be specifically expressed within the periodontal ligament. FDC-SP expression can be induced in human FDC-like cell lines by exposure to tumour necrosis factor (TNF). Exposure of human peripheral blood cells to LPS can also result in FDC-SP expression, but TNF exposure does not cause FDC-SP expression and similarly LPS exposure does not cause expression within FDC-like cell lines. Expression in mouse splenocytes can be induced by LPS in a similar manner to that of human peripheral blood cells. In mice, as in humans, FDC-SP is not expressed in B cells, but FDC-SP expression in FDCs can be dependent on B cells after their stimulation by CD40. After stimulation with CD40, B cells have been shown to be able to induce phenotypic changes in FDCs through the B cell's surface TNF expression. It has therefore been suggested that the expression of TNF cytokines by B cells causes FDC-SP expression within FDCs upon contact. This reaction is said to be typical during GC formation. FDC-SP is highly expressed in the junctional epithelium and well as in the tonsils, prostate, lymph nodes and trachea. The proline rich region in the C-terminal half bears some resemblance to the antimicrobial peptide Bac5. FDC-SP may therefore have a role in microbial defense in the oral cavity.
Calcium is a chemical element; it has symbol Ca and atomic number 20. As an alkaline earth metal, calcium is a reactive metal that forms a dark oxide-nitride layer when exposed to air. Its physical and chemical properties are most similar to its heavier homologues strontium and barium. It is the fifth most abundant element in Earth's crust, and the third most abundant metal, after iron and aluminium. The most common calcium compound on Earth is calcium carbonate, found in limestone and the fossils of early sea life; gypsum, anhydrite, fluorite, and apatite are also sources of calcium. The name comes from the Latin word calx (meaning "lime"), which was obtained from heating limestone. Some calcium compounds were known to the ancients, though their chemistry was unknown until the seventeenth century. Pure calcium was isolated in 1808 via electrolysis of its oxide by Humphry Davy, who named the element. Calcium compounds are widely used in many industries: in foods and pharmaceuticals for calcium supplementation, in the paper industry as bleaches, as components in cement and electrical insulators, and in the manufacture of soaps. On the other hand, the metal in pure form has few applications due to its high reactivity; still, in small quantities it is often used as an alloying component in steelmaking, and sometimes, as a calcium–lead alloy, in making automotive batteries. Calcium is the most abundant metal and the fifth-most abundant element in the human body.
He was later threatened by the FDA with dismissal. By that time, the drug had been linked to 63 liver-failure deaths and had generated sales of more than $2.1 billion for Warner-Lambert. The drug cost $1,400 a year per patient in 1998. Pfizer, which had acquired Warner-Lambert in February 2000, reported the withdrawal of Rezulin cost $136 million.
== Potential risks == In December 2024, 38 scientists, including several synthetic biology researchers and two Nobel laureates, warned that the creation of mirror-image life could cause "unprecedented and irreversible harm" to human health and ecosystems worldwide. The reversed structure of mirror-image bacteria could allow them to evade many mechanisms critical for immunity and predation that have evolved to recognize natural-chirality structures. As a result, mirror-image bacteria could potentially escape immune defenses and invade natural ecosystems, leading to "pervasive lethal infections in a substantial fraction of plant and animal species, including humans." Given these risks, the scientists concluded that mirror-image organisms should not be created without compelling evidence of safety. As of January 2026, no researchers are known to be pursuing the creation of mirror life; several who had been pursuing it have since renounced it and signed on as coauthors on the 2024 paper. Since the publication of the 2024 paper, 96 biotechnology experts signed a statement agreeing with its conclusions, and attendees of the first international conference on mirror-image life largely agreed that it should not be created. Germany’s Central Commission for Biological Safety (ZKBS) issued a statement that while applied research on mirror biomolecules should continue, mirror bacteria could pose serious risks, and that "a broad scientific and societal debate" was necessary.

=== Four Conditions === Oven-dry (OD) is defined as the condition of an aggregate where there is no moisture within any part of the aggregate. This condition can be achieved in a laboratory by heating the aggregate to 220 °F (105 °C) for a period of time. Air-dry (AD) is defined as the condition of an aggregate in which there are some water or moisture in the pores of the aggregate, while the outer surfaces of it is dry. This is a natural condition of aggregates in summer or in dry regions. In this condition, an aggregate will absorb water from other materials added to the surface of it, which would possibly have some impact on some characters of the aggregate. Saturated surface dry (SSD) is defined as the condition of an aggregate in which the surfaces of the particles are "dry" (i.e., they will neither absorb any of the mixing water added; nor will they contribute any of their contained water to the mix), but the inter-particle voids are saturated with water. In this condition aggregates will not affect the free water content of a composite material. The water adsorption by mass (Am) is defined in terms of the mass of saturated-surface-dry (Mssd) sample and the mass of oven dried test sample (Mdry) by the formula:
Untreated GDM also interferes with maturation, causing dysmature babies prone to respiratory distress syndrome due to incomplete lung maturation and impaired surfactant synthesis. Unlike pre-gestational diabetes, gestational diabetes has not been clearly shown to be an independent risk factor for birth defects. Birth defects usually originate sometime during the first trimester (before the 13th week) of pregnancy, whereas GDM gradually develops and is least pronounced during the first and early second trimester. Studies have shown that the offspring of women with GDM are at a higher risk for congenital malformations. A large case-control study found that gestational diabetes was linked with a limited group of birth defects, and that this association was generally limited to women with a higher body mass index (≥ 25 kg/m2). It is difficult to ensure this is not partially due to the inclusion of women with pre-existing type 2 diabetes who were not diagnosed before pregnancy. Because of conflicting studies, it is unclear at the moment whether women with GDM have a higher risk of preeclampsia. In the HAPO study, the risk of preeclampsia was between 13% and 37% higher, although not all possible confounding factors were corrected.
=== Nanomaterials === Nanoparticles are used for several antimicrobial applications due to their extraordinary behavior. More studies are being carried out on the ability of nanomaterials to be utilized for antimicrobial coatings due to their highly reactive nature.
In the establishment of the Soviet Union in the former Russian Empire, Bolshevism was the ideological basis. As the only legal vanguard party, it decided almost all policies, which the communist party represented as correct. Because Leninism was the revolutionary means to achieving socialism in the praxis of government, the relationship between ideology and decision-making inclined to pragmatism and most policy decisions were taken in light of the continual and permanent development of Marxism–Leninism, with ideological adaptation to material conditions. The Bolshevik Party lost in the 1917 Russian Constituent Assembly election, obtaining 23.3% of the vote, to the Socialist Revolutionary Party, which obtained 37.6%. On 6 January 1918, the Draft Decree on the Dissolution of the Constituent Assembly was issued by the Central Executive Committee of the Congress of Soviets, a committee dominated by Vladimir Lenin, who had previously supported multi-party free elections. After the Bolshevik defeat, Lenin started referring to the assembly as a "deceptive form of bourgeois-democratic parliamentarism". This was criticised as being the development of vanguardism as a form of hierarchical party–elite that controlled society. Within five years of the death of Lenin, Joseph Stalin completed his rise to power and was the leader of the Soviet Union who theorised and applied the socialist theories of Lenin and Karl Marx as political expediencies used to realise his plans for the Soviet Union and for world socialism.
=== Ovarian === AMH is produced by granulosa cells from pre-antral and antral follicles, restricting expression to growing follicles, until they have reached the size and differentiation state at which they are selected for dominance by the action of pituitary FSH. Ovarian AMH expression has been observed as early as 36 weeks' gestation in the humans' fetus. AMH expression is greatest in the recruitment stage of folliculogenesis, in the preantral and small antral follicles. This expression diminishes as follicles develop and enter selection stage, upon which FSH expression increases. Some authorities suggest it is a measure of certain aspects of ovarian function, useful in assessing conditions such as polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome and premature ovarian failure.

NMN is nicotinamide mononucleotide, a nucleotide intermediate in NAD+ metabolism. It occurs naturally in cells and can also be produced synthetically for research or commercial use. Its name reflects its composition: nicotinamide, ribose, and a phosphate group.
NMN is a direct precursor in the NAD+ salvage pathway. NMNAT enzymes convert NMN and ATP into NAD+, a coenzyme used in many cellular reactions. This relationship makes NMN a focus of studies on NAD+ metabolism.
Small amounts of NMN have been reported in some plant foods, but measured levels vary and are not consistently quantified. Dietary contribution is generally considered minor compared with endogenous production. Food-matrix effects make accurate analysis difficult.
Purity is commonly measured by high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet or mass spectrometric detection. Nuclear magnetic resonance can confirm identity and anomeric composition. Water content and residual solvents may be tested separately.
