In the NAD+ salvage pathway, the enzyme NAMPT converts nicotinamide and a phosphate-donor molecule into NMN. A second enzyme, NMNAT, then converts NMN into NAD+. Nicotinamide riboside can also enter this route after being converted to NMN by nicotinamide riboside kinases. Because NMN sits at a junction between precursor uptake and NAD+ formation, its cellular concentration is tightly linked to enzyme activity and tissue type. NAD+ participates in redox reactions, signaling, and DNA repair, and its levels decline with age in some animal models, though human evidence remains more limited and context-dependent.
Research interest in NMN increased after animal studies reported that oral or injected NMN can raise NAD+ levels in some tissues. How NMN is absorbed and distributed in humans is not fully established. Some evidence suggests extracellular NMN may be dephosphorylated to nicotinamide riboside before cellular uptake, while other studies propose specific transport routes. Direct human data on these mechanisms remain limited. Regulatory status also varies: in some countries NMN is treated as a dietary supplement, while elsewhere it is restricted or requires approval, and these differences affect labeling, sale, and research.
Research on NMN includes cell studies, animal experiments, and a growing number of human trials. Many early findings come from mice, where changes in NAD+ levels and metabolic markers have been reported. Human data are more limited, and questions remain about effective routes of administration, tissue distribution, and long-term effects. Some trials measure NAD+ in blood or tissue, while others assess physical function or metabolic outcomes. Regulatory status differs between countries, and NMN is not universally approved as a dietary supplement or therapeutic agent.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, commonly abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure combines a nicotinamide ring with a ribose sugar and a phosphate group. The compound appears in cells across many organisms as an intermediate in the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+. Because NMN sits close to NAD+ in metabolism, it has drawn interest in biochemistry and aging research. The molecule is not a dietary essential nutrient in the classical sense, and its presence in food is generally low and variable.

Inside cells, the enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase, or NAMPT, converts nicotinamide and a ribose-phosphate donor into NMN. A second enzyme, NMN adenylyltransferase, then converts NMN into NAD+. NAD+ participates in redox reactions and serves as a substrate for signaling enzymes such as sirtuins, PARPs, and CD38. Because NAD+ levels tend to decline with age in many organisms, NMN has drawn interest as a possible way to influence that decline. Whether oral NMN reliably raises NAD+ in human tissues, and whether any such change modifies disease risk, remain open research questions.
NMN is present in small amounts in some foods, including certain vegetables, fruits, and animal products, but food content varies widely and is not well standardized. In laboratory research, NMN is used as a tool compound to study NAD+ metabolism, mitochondrial function, and cellular stress responses. Animal studies have reported changes in NAD+ levels and various physiological measures after NMN administration, but species differences and study designs limit direct extrapolation to humans. Human trials have largely focused on safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics, with fewer studies examining clinical endpoints.
NMN is present in small amounts in various foods, including certain vegetables, fruits, and milk, though dietary quantities are generally low. Laboratory research often uses synthetic or enzymatically produced NMN. The compound has drawn interest because NAD+ levels decline with age in some tissues and because restoring NAD+ may affect metabolism in animal models. Whether oral NMN produces meaningful NAD+ increases in humans and whether such changes translate into health benefits are not fully established.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure combines a nicotinamide base with a ribose sugar and a phosphate group. Within cells, NMN sits on the biosynthetic route that recycles nicotinamide back into nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+. Because NAD+ participates in redox reactions and signaling, enzymes that produce and consume it influence many metabolic processes. The compound is therefore best described as an intermediate rather than a final signaling molecule.
The biologically relevant form of NMN is generally the beta anomer, which is recognized by NMN adenylyltransferases. NMN is polar and water soluble, and it does not readily diffuse across lipid membranes without assistance. Whether intact NMN enters cells through a specific transporter remains an open question; some studies propose solute carrier family members, while other work favors extracellular dephosphorylation to nicotinamide riboside followed by uptake. This transport and compartmentalization debate affects how researchers interpret oral administration studies. The distinction between intracellular synthesis and extracellular delivery is central to current discussion.
Terminology around NMN can be confusing because several related compounds share the vitamin B3 family. Nicotinamide riboside is a nucleoside, whereas NMN is a nucleotide with a phosphate group, and NAD+ is a dinucleotide coenzyme rather than a simple precursor. Niacin and nicotinamide are also NAD+ precursors but follow different metabolic entry points. In commercial and scientific writing, NMN usually refers to beta-nicotinamide mononucleotide unless another form is specified. Consistent nomenclature helps distinguish chemical identity from proposed biological effects.
In July 2024, Lyme Disease Vaccine Reached Completion of the Primary Series In July 2024, Pfizer and Flagship Pioneering announced an "Innovation Supply Chain" partnership to co-develop 10 drug candidates. Each party committed $50 million upfront, leveraging Flagship's ecosystem of over 40 startups to align with Pfizer's priorities. === Taiwan === In October 2006, Taiwan banned ractopamine along with other beta-adrenergic agonists. In a 2012 climb-down, its legislature passed amendments to its Act Governing Food Sanitation, authorising government agencies to set safety standards for ractopamine. The Taiwanese Department of Health ultimately established an MRL of 10 ppb for ractopamine in beef on 31 July 2012. The American Institute in Taiwan, which represents US interests in Taiwan, states that these "and many other countries have determined that meat from animals fed ractopamine is safe for human consumption"; this is in the context of an ongoing trade dispute between Taiwan and the US on this subject, which threatened to prevent Taiwan's entry to the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact. In 2020, restrictions on imports of US pork with ractopamine were relaxed, leading to protests. A referendum took place on December 18, 2021, deciding whether to ban the import of pork with ractopamine, and the ban was rejected.
=== Production, aerobic conditions === A typical intracellular concentration of ATP is 1–10 μmol per gram of muscle tissue in a variety of eukaryotes. The dephosphorylation of ATP and rephosphorylation of ADP and AMP occur repeatedly in the course of aerobic metabolism. ATP can be produced by a number of distinct cellular processes; the three main pathways in eukaryotes are (1) glycolysis, (2) the citric acid cycle/oxidative phosphorylation, and (3) beta-oxidation. The overall process of oxidizing glucose to carbon dioxide, the combination of pathways 1 and 2, known as cellular respiration, produces about 30 equivalents of ATP from each molecule of glucose. ATP production by a non-photosynthetic aerobic eukaryote occurs mainly in the mitochondria, which comprise nearly 25% of the volume of a typical cell.
==== Qatar ==== In March 2018 American Republican fundraiser Elliott Broidy filed a lawsuit against Qatar, alleging that Qatar's government stole and leaked his emails in order to discredit him because he was viewed "as an impediment to their plan to improve the country's standing in Washington." In May 2018, the lawsuit named Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, brother of the Emir of Qatar, and his associate Ahmed Al-Rumaihi, as allegedly orchestrating Qatar's cyber warfare campaign against Broidy. Further litigation revealed that the same cybercriminals who targeted Broidy had targeted as many as 1,200 other individuals, some of whom are also "well-known enemies of Qatar" such as senior officials of the U.A.E., Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. While these hackers almost always obscured their location, some of their activity was traced to a telecommunication network in Qatar.
==== Liothyronine ==== Treatment with liothyronine (synthetic T3) alone has not received enough study to make a recommendation as to its use; due to its shorter half-life it would need to be taken more often than levothyroxine. Adding liothyronine to levothyroxine has been suggested as a measure to provide better symptom control, but this has not been confirmed by studies. In 2007, the British Thyroid Association stated that combined T4 and T3 therapy carried a higher rate of side effects and no benefit over T4 alone. Similarly, American guidelines discourage combination therapy due to a lack of evidence, although they acknowledge that some people feel better when receiving combination therapy. Guidelines by National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) discourage liothyronine. People with hypothyroidism who do not feel well despite optimal levothyroxine dosing may request adjunctive treatment with liothyronine. A 2012 guideline from the European Thyroid Association recommends that support should be offered concerning the chronic nature of the disease and that other causes of the symptoms should be excluded. The addition of liothyronine should be regarded as experimental, initially only for a trial period of 3 months, and in a set ratio to the current dose of levothyroxine. The guideline explicitly aims to enhance the safety of this approach and to counter its indiscriminate use. A 2014 guideline from the American Thyroid Association recommends against the use of liothyronine.

=== North American supply === As the war intensified with German air raids on the UK, Florey and Ethel decided to send their children away to a safer country in July 1940. The United States was not yet at war, and John Fulton, the Sterling Professor of Physiology at Yale University, and his wife Lucia agreed to care for them at their home in New Haven, Connecticut, "for the duration". In April 1941, the Rockefeller Foundation's Warren Weaver met with Florey, and they discussed the difficulty of producing sufficient penicillin to conduct clinical trials. Weaver arranged for the foundation to fund a three-month visit to the United States for Florey and a colleague so they could explore the possibility of the production of penicillin there. Since his aim was to persuade a firm to manufacture penicillin, and Heatley knew the most about penicillin production, Florey chose to take Heatley with him, and did not tell Chain until the morning of their departure. Chain, who saw penicillin as a joint project between himself and Florey, with Heatley as a laboratory technician, was greatly offended. Chain later wrote: "I left the room silently but shattered by the experience of this underhand trick and act of bad faith, the worst so far in my experience of Florey. It spoiled my initially good relations with this man for ever." Florey and Heatley left by air from Lisbon for the United States on 27 June 1941. In New Haven Florey met Fulton and was reunited with his children.
== Protactinium-231 == Protactinium-231 is the longest-lived isotope of protactinium, with a half-life of 32,760 years. In nature, it is found in trace amounts as part of the actinium series, which starts with the primordial isotope uranium-235; the equilibrium concentration in uranium ore is 46.5 atoms of 231Pa per million of 235U. In nuclear reactors, it is one of the few long-lived radioactive actinides produced as a byproduct of the projected thorium fuel cycle, as a result of (n,2n) reactions where a fast neutron removes a neutron from 232Th or 232U, and can also be destroyed by neutron capture, though the cross section for this reaction is also low.
Braden Eric Peters (born 2005 or 2006), better known as Clavicular or Clav, is an American livestreamer, internet personality, and influencer. === In plants and animals === Capillary action is seen in many plants, and plays a part in transpiration. Water is brought high up in trees by branching; evaporation at the leaves creating depressurization; probably by osmotic pressure added at the roots; and possibly at other locations inside the plant, especially when gathering humidity with air roots. Capillary action for uptake of water has been described in some small animals, such as Ligia exotica and Moloch horridus.
==== Hydrothermal vents ==== Carbon dioxide is also introduced into the oceans through hydrothermal vents. The Champagne hydrothermal vent, found at the Northwest Eifuku volcano in the Mariana Trench, produces almost pure liquid carbon dioxide, one of only two known sites in the world as of 2004, the other being in the Okinawa Trough. The finding of a submarine lake of liquid carbon dioxide in the Okinawa Trough was reported in 2006.
=== Oral glucose tolerance test === A standardized oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) should be done in the morning after an overnight fast of between 8 and 14 hours. During the three previous days, the subject must have an unrestricted diet (containing at least 150 g carbohydrate per day) and unlimited physical activity. The subject should remain seated during the test and should not smoke throughout the test. IADPSG (International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups) has developed diagnostic criteria for GDM, based on the results of adverse pregnancy outcomes in the Hyperglycemia and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes (HAPO) study. These were recommended by WHO 2013. According to these, gestational diabetes mellitus should be diagnosed at any time in pregnancy if one of the following criteria is met, using a 75 g glucose OGTT:

Nicotinamide mononucleotide is a nucleotide intermediate in the biosynthesis of NAD+. It consists of nicotinamide attached to a ribose phosphate unit. NMN occurs naturally in cells and is present at low levels in some foods.
NMN is a direct precursor in the NAD+ salvage pathway. Enzymes called NMNAT convert NMN into NAD+, a coenzyme used in metabolism and cell signaling. Raising NMN may increase NAD+ in some experimental settings, but the effect depends on tissue and organism.
No. Nicotinamide riboside is a related compound that lacks the phosphate group present in NMN. Cells can convert nicotinamide riboside into NMN, and both compounds feed into NAD+ production through overlapping routes.
